Study Highlights Benefits of Isoclast™ Active to Food Chain Productivity and Profitability

The Nomisma Research into Innovative Pest control was Presented at the Fruit Logistica Trade Fair

Berlin, Germany, 6 Feb., 2020 – European farmers can avoid billions of euros of losses by protecting their crops with innovative products such as those containing Isoclast™ active, a new study has found.

Presented at the Fruit Logistica fresh produce trade show in Berlin, the research by the Nomisma independent consulting group showed that crops worth €129bn on 54.1 million hectares, or 31% of Europe’s total agricultural area, could benefit from the use of the product.

The study was commissioned by Corteva Agriscience to explore the economic benefits of using the breakthrough insecticide against sap-feeding insect pests in apple, peach, tomato and potato. It is commercially available as Closer™ insecticide.

It estimated that failure to use these new products could result in millions of euros of lost production value in 2020, including:

·       An 18% decrease for dessert apples (range -12%/-24%) amounting to more than €1billion losses

·       A 34% decrease for peaches (range -28%/-41%), amounting to €1.2billion losses

·       A 33% decrease for greenhouse tomatoes (range -27%/-40%), amounting to €1.6billion losses

·       A 10% decrease for potatoes (range -7%/-14%), amounting to €1.3billion losses

“We are proud to present our solutions to Fruit Logistica visitors,” said Sonia Cavanna, Corteva Agriscience Global Food Chain Technical Expert and European Food Chain Leader. “By sharing our expertise and collaborating with value chain players, we help farmers enhance profitability, retailers and food industries secure a safe and reliable supply of crops and support consumer interests by empowering choice.

“This study was commissioned to understand the potential of this innovative product, as part of our efforts to foster the environmental and economic sustainability of key crops in European agriculture. As a global leader in the sector, we are committed to supporting farmers in tackling emergencies arising from new pests and climate change while ensuring a profitable yield, and to meeting consumer demand for more sustainable food.”

Ersilia Di Tullio, Project Leader at Nomisma, adds: “We selected the key producer countries for each crop, with the presence of main sap-feeding pests controlled by Isoclast (aphids, scales and whiteflies) estimated at country level over the medium term (2022). We also took into account the presence of viruses vectored by these pests, if causing relevant damage.

“We then simulated the impact scenario for the commercial production of each crop by 2022, showing the effects of reduced efficacy of the protection portfolio, without the entry of new insecticides like Isoclast into the market. The data shows that new generation insecticide molecules, delivering high efficacy and low footprint, are fundamental for the protection of the key crops analyzed.”
