Understanding active ingredients, use patterns and long-term vegetation management

Herbicide resistance is an important consideration in every vegetation management program. Whether managing roadsides, rights-of-way, pasture, rangeland or other non-crop areas, the goal is not simply to control weeds this season. It is to preserve the long-term effectiveness of the tools available while applying the right solution for the right weed, site and management objective.

Resistance develops when a weed population is repeatedly exposed to the same herbicide mode of action, allowing naturally tolerant weeds to survive, reproduce and become more common over time. Repeated use of the same herbicide approach can create selection pressure, which may eventually reduce control from products that were once effective.

For land managers, the key message is simple: resistance management is not about avoiding one active ingredient. It is about understanding how each active ingredient works, where it fits best, and how it should be used as part of a broader program.

Not All Group 4 Herbicides Are the Same

Group 4 herbicides are widely used for broadleaf weed and woody plant control. They mimic natural plant growth hormones, disrupting normal growth in susceptible plants.

However, grouping herbicides by mode of action does not mean all active ingredients within that group behave the same way in the field. Group 4 includes a range of active ingredients with different strengths, use patterns, soil activity, persistence profiles and fit across vegetation management programs.

For example, active ingredients such as triclopyr, picloram, aminopyralid and Rinskor™ active all belong within the broader Group 4 classification, but they are not interchangeable. Each has a specific role depending on the target weed or woody species, the application site, non-target species, residual activity, environmental conditions and long-term land use objectives.

Each active ingredient targets a selective range of broadleaf plants (weeds and brush) more effectively based on site-specific targets available on the plant. Other considerations regarding residual activity include:

  • Precipitation amount (pre- and post-application)
  • Soil classification
  • Plant stressors such as disease or drought
  • Land development goals, including whether legumes will be introduced and when

That distinction matters. A responsible vegetation management program should evaluate active ingredients individually and tank mix other effective actives for best results to reduce the risk of developing resistance, rather than making broad assumptions based only on herbicide group.

A strong resistance-management program should:

  • Rotate effective herbicide groups where practical
  • Avoid repeated reliance on a single product or active ingredient
  • Use labelled rates based on the target weed and growth stage
  • Apply treatments when weeds are actively growing and most susceptible
  • Scout treated areas and control escapes before they set seed
  • Incorporate mechanical, cultural or grazing-based practices where appropriate
  • Monitor sites over time and keep treatment records
  • Select products based on the target weed, site conditions and management objective
