Cereal growers - prioritise weed control in the coming weeks

Sprayer demand will increase significantly over the coming weeks, but timely weed control must not be overlooked. With pressure on application windows, there is a temptation to combine multiple inputs into a single spray pass; however, large multi way tank mixes are often a compromise, whether on weed control, disease control, or both.

Early applications are particularly important in forward crops this season, where weeds can sit below or become shielded by the developing crop canopy and are therefore harder to control.

Fresh flushes of grass weeds are now emerging, including wild oats, ryegrass and several brome species, alongside a wide range of broad-leaved weeds such as cleavers, volunteer beans, poppies and many others. These weeds are far easier and more reliably controlled when targeted early particularly if larger, more complex tank mixes of plant growth regulators, fungicides and micronutrients are planned later in the season. Getting weed control sorted early allows crops to move forward with a clean slate.

Most post-emergence herbicides act solely through foliar uptake, meaning spray coverage is critical for performance. This is especially important in dense, early-drilled or fast-developing crops, where canopy biomass is increasing rapidly this season and crop interception can limit weed uptake and control.

To achieve the best results from products such as Broadway® Ultra, tank mixes should be kept as simple as possible in the early stages, with the focus firmly on weed control. Applications should be made to actively growing weeds under stable conditions, targeting the appropriate weed size.

An adjuvant should always be included, alongside optimised application technique: forward speeds of 10–12 kph, a minimum water volume of 100 l/ha, correct nozzle selection and accurate boom height all play a key role in maximising coverage and performance.

Broadway Ultra is a strong, broad-spectrum, economical fit for winter wheat and triticale this season, delivering control of bromes, ryegrass, wild oats, meadow grass and a wide range of broad-leaved weeds. It offers good tank-mix compatibility, excellent crop safety, flexibility within ALS sequences and favourable following-crop options.

Where broad leaved weeds are already becoming more established, consider tank-mixing Zypar® with Broadway Ultra. Alternatively, a standalone Zypar application at T0 can provide a cost-effective option for the early control of difficult broad-leaved weeds.
