Meet Caroline Linsdell: Corteva’s Technical Services Specialist

1. Can you tell us a little about your background and what led you to join Corteva?

I started my journey in the agricultural industry over 40 years ago, working in an administrative role for another agribusiness. After returning to work following maternity leave, my line manager encouraged me to study for the BASIS qualification so I could get involved with the hotline. Despite having no agricultural background whatsoever, I passed BASIS in 1996 - there was no Foundation BASIS around then. I was the first woman to pass BASIS with no agricultural background. At the time, there were few women working in technical agricultural roles, making this an important milestone in my career. Since then, I have continued to develop my expertise, earning both the BASIS Plant Protection Award and the BASIS Stored Combinable Crops qualification.

I joined Corteva after being made redundant from my previous role. Colleagues I already knew at Corteva approached me about covering the technical hotline during a maternity leave period. What began as a six-month opportunity quickly became something more permanent. I was thrown in at the deep end, as joining during a busy season was a steep learning curve, but two years later I’m still here, and hopefully for much longer!

2. What does your role as a Technical Support Specialist involve on a day-to-day basis?

My role is very varied, with no two days being the same. I provide technical support and guidance, help organise BASIS training and events, manage administrative processes and work closely with different teams to ensure they have the resources and information they need. A large part of my role involves reviewing and maintaining technical documentation, supporting product-related activities, and helping to ensure information on our website is accurate and up to date. I am also part of the Emergency Response Team, which adds another unique and rewarding aspect to my role.

3. Do you have a connection to agriculture outside of your current role?

Not directly. In fact, I had no agricultural background when I first entered the industry, which shows that there are many different routes into agriculture. I believe my great-grandfather was a farmer, but my connection to the sector has come through my own career.

4. What has been the most interesting project or memorable aspect of your current role?

One of the most rewarding aspects of the role is constantly learning about new products, particularly in grassland and amenity, which certainly keeps my brain ticking! Getting to be part of the wider technical team and collaborating across different crop teams is also a lot of fun.

I also enjoy helping ensure information on the website is accurate and consistent for customers. Above all though, the people have made the experience especially memorable. Everyone has been incredibly kind, welcoming and supportive, making me feel part of the team from day one. It definitely feels like I’ve been at Corteva much longer than two years!

5. How do you stay up to date with the latest advancements and trends in agriculture?

Working in a dynamic industry like agriculture means there's always something new to learn – it’s a difficult question to answer because I’m learning all the time! Attending events such as Cereals and other agricultural shows helps me stay informed about emerging trends and innovations. I also regularly read industry publications and farming magazines to keep up to date with developments across the sector.

6. What advice would you offer to professionals considering a career in agriculture?

Be curious and keep asking those questions. Agriculture offers a huge range of opportunities, and you don't need a farming background to succeed. Seek out new experiences and stay open to learning from others. I never imagined where my career would take me when I first joined the agricultural industry, but many of my experiences have come from embracing opportunities and stepping outside my comfort zone.

7. From your perspective, what sets Corteva apart from other companies in the industry?

Without hesitation, I would say the people! The culture at Corteva is supportive, welcoming and collaborative, which makes it such a great place to work.

8. What are you most looking forward to in the coming year at Corteva?

I'm looking forward to continuing my journey with Corteva, developing my knowledge and seeing how the business continues to evolve. Agriculture is always changing, so it's exciting to be part of that progress.

9. Outside of work, where are we most likely to find you?

Most likely spending time with my family, including my two sons and grandson! I also enjoy keeping active through personal training sessions at my local gym, which has a fantastic community atmosphere.

During the winter months, I enjoy relaxing with jigsaw puzzles, while games such as Scrabble and Mahjong help keep my mind sharp. I also enjoy looking after my grandson and my son's dog, and whenever possible I love travelling abroad to relax, unwind and enjoy a good book.
