Meet Matt Barnes: Corteva's Area Manager for Wales and West England

1. Can you tell us a little about your background and what led you to join Corteva?

I joined Corteva in November 2025 with 13 years of experience in the agricultural sector behind me. I started my career working on development trials to furthering my experience and knowledge within technical and commercial roles.

2. What does your role as an Area Manager involve on a day-to-day basis?

The Area Manager position is a diverse role, and each day can be very different from the last. From attending farmer meetings and discussing strategies for the season ahead, to showcasing our solutions to agronomists, farmers and the wider industry, no two days are the same. I also enjoy supporting and promoting the agricultural sector through events such as Open Farm Sunday. Every day brings something different and real energy to the role.

3. Do you have a connection to agriculture outside of your current role?

I have been involved with agriculture in some form throughout my life, from helping on friends' dairy farms in Lancashire while growing up to keeping horses today. I think everyone’s connection with agriculture is a lot closer than they think, from the countryside we drive through to each meal we eat.

4. What has been the most interesting project or a particularly memorable moment in your current role?

With a large part of my area being mixed farming I particularly enjoy being involved with our solutions which bridge into the arable and livestock world. Whether it's discussing bracken control in the depths of the Welsh countryside or introducing new solutions for the expanding maize sector, I find this area particularly rewarding.

5. How do you stay up to date with the latest advancements and trends in agriculture?

I stay up to date by regularly engaging with growers, agronomists and industry professionals, reading agricultural publications, listening to industry podcasts, attending trade shows and visiting field days hosted by other organisations. I also exchange knowledge and insights with colleagues across the Corteva team, helping me stay informed on emerging technologies, market developments and evolving best practices.

6. What advice would you offer to professionals aspiring to pursue a similar career path or leadership role in the agricultural industry?

The agricultural industry encompasses a huge range of roles, including science, sales, engineering, marketing and even content creation and social media! My top tips would be to seize every opportunity to gain experience and never be afraid to try new things. It’s a great industry and brings a very rewarding career.

8. What are you most looking forward to in the coming year at Corteva?

One of the highlights of the year is the many agricultural shows and events we attend. These provide a great opportunity to meet with customers, discuss Corteva solutions, and understand the challenges and opportunities they are facing on farm.

9. Would you recommend Corteva as a place to work?

Yes, there is a real team culture in which individuals are given the chance to shine and grow into the many varied roles within the company.

10. Outside of work, where are we most likely to find you?

Whether I'm course fishing on the banks of the Severn or Avon, walking our two German Shepherds, or exploring the countryside with my family, you'll almost always find me doing something active outdoors.
