Get early control with Clincher® SF and Loyant® herbicides
Rice growers know uncertainty all too well. Between shifting weather, weed resistance, water management and other variables, nothing is guaranteed — which makes managing the factors within a growers’ control even more valuable.
Fortunately, effective early-season weed control is one of those variables. By shifting postemergence applications earlier in the season with products like Clincher® SF and Loyant® herbicides, growers can get ahead of weed pressure, protect yield potential, improve their bottom lines and reduce the risk of costly late-season rescue treatments.
As Dr. Jason Bond, Extension weed scientist at Mississippi State University, puts it: “Anything you can do upfront — moving forward and not reacting to the situation — if you can control the situation, then you’re going to be time ahead, and time ahead is money ahead.”
Research confirms what growers already know: Dealing with weeds early is not only more effective, but also more efficient. Weeds that mature have already competed for nutrients, water and sunlight, reducing stand uniformity and impacting yield potential — plus, they’re harder to control later in the season.
“Early season you get better control, more consistent control. And then if it doesn’t work or you have an issue, you have time to do something before it gets out of hand.”
— Hunter Bowman, Ph.D., market development specialist with Corteva Agriscience
“The return on investment is going to be better on that early-season application because you’re in the window of weed interference with the crop,” Bond added.
By being proactive, growers often see better early results, use lower application rates and avoid late-season aerial passes, helping control costs while maintaining season-long weed control.
For early, wide-spectrum annual and seedling perennial grass control, applying Clincher SF to two- to three-leaf rice is a go-to option. It tackles barnyardgrass — including ALS-, propanil- and quinclorac-resistant species — sprangletop, knotgrass, broadleaf signalgrass, fall panicum, junglerice and more.
While Clincher SF offers flexibility to apply from the one- to two-leaf stage up to 60 days before harvest, early timing unlocks its full potential, especially when adequate soil moisture is present.
“We found that Clincher SF works well in that window — that’s the best time for consistent control,” Bowman said. “So, if you’ve got a rain coming or you’ve had a wet spring, Clincher works awesome early on small grasses.”
While Clincher SF is a key tool for grass control, Loyant herbicide with Rinksor® active provides an effective postemergence option for broadleaf weeds, sedges and aquatics — including ALS-resistant annual sedges that have become increasingly problematic in the Mid-South.
“The ALS-resistant sedges — they’re a problem in Mississippi, and a problem on an even bigger scale in other states… but Loyant fits right into that, offering good control,” Bond said.
Like Clincher SF, Loyant performs well on wet soils, where sedges thrive.
“When we have a situation where we can’t use a ground rig and we’ve got to make an aerial application, Loyant also fits well there,” Bond said.
And when growers face both grass and sedge pressure?
“They work well together,” Bowman confirmed. “If you’ve got the two issues at the same time, they work very well together.”
Together, Clincher SF and Loyant herbicides give growers complementary tools to address problem grasses and weeds in a single early-season pass, deploying multiple modes of action and contributing to cleaner fields throughout the season.
From weather to water management, uncertainty in rice production is a given. But an early-season herbicide plan built around solutions that fill critical gaps — like Clincher SF and Loyant herbicides — can help growers set the pace for their weed management program, providing time, confidence and flexibility as the season unfolds.
“If you can go into it and dictate what’s going on to the level of your control, you’re going to be a lot better off than reacting to the situation that the weeds and the weather deal you,” Bond said.
