An anticipated El Niño weather pattern arrived in May and is strengthening, keeping favorable weather systems moving through the Corn Belt. Forecasting models are tracking what could become one of the strongest super El Niños on record, likely arriving in November.
The super El Niño pattern happens when Pacific Ocean surface temperatures near the equator rise more than 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F) above average over a three-month period, altering atmospheric conditions beyond normal. It’s double the 1-degree C threshold of a regular El Niño and occurs roughly every 10 to 15 years.
It comes after corn’s critical pollination period and as meteorologists and farmers monitor weather for impacts on grain and pod fill as well as harvest conditions. Meteorologists say it’s a time of year that’s notoriously challenging to predict in a normal season, let alone with an impending super El Niño.
“During a typical El Niño, we’ll begin to transition from a very active weather pattern to a warmer-and-drier period,” said John Baranick, DTN agricultural meteorologist. “A super El Niño will prolong warmer air temperatures. We don’t expect the warmth to go away this fall, even into December.”
Precipitation should diminish this fall, but the models haven’t aligned on timing — whether rainfall slows down in October or November. “The good news is moisture should be there to complete grain fill. We’re currently less confident in predicting a good drydown period before harvest, as it might happen in September or not until November. It’s too early to predict,” Baranick said.
Aside from the long-term drought in western Nebraska and the one farther south in Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee, the main short-term dry spots are in northeastern Nebraska, southeastern South Dakota, northwestern Iowa and southwestern Minnesota. There are also some patches of dryness across Wisconsin and Minnesota.
“The drought map is a lagging indicator, as current rainfall takes time to diminish intensity levels,” Baranick said. “I foresee less drought heading into fall, making it hard to find too many significant problems in the Corn Belt.”
Another benefit of an El Niño pattern is that summertime heat in the Midwest doesn’t linger. Hot spells will still occur, but they are usually short-lived and don’t recur as often.
Regarding extreme drought, the High Plains have accumulated months of deficits. Rainfall is occurring, but it will take some time to chip away at this level of severity.
Crop weather history provides insight to meteorologists as they formulate forecasts, especially longer-range predictions. The most recent super El Niño was in the 2023 crop year.
“That year, it was very dry in May and June; corn leaves were severely rolling, and farmers were nervous,” Baranick said. “Then the rains cut loose the last week of June and didn’t stop for six weeks. Yields turned out pretty good that year.”
While the pattern has been similar this year, the dryness isn’t as severe. Consistent storms brought rainfall to large portions of the Midwest from mid-June to mid-July, tracking with the 2023 pattern, only on a greater scale.
DTN is predicting a warmer, drier fall across the Corn Belt and wetter conditions across Texas and Oklahoma through to the Southeast, potentially clipping the southern Corn Belt, Baranick said.
“During the fall weather pattern transition, we’ll see plenty of variability between dry periods and wet periods,” he said. “But nothing suggests that we’re going to have major issues, so we see a pretty favorable harvest period.”
The potential for tropical storms that originate in the Gulf of Mexico looks low, given normal El Niño patterns. Tropical Storm Arthur occurred in the Gulf over a 12-hour period in late June, dropping heavy rains across Louisiana to Georgia, but it did not impact the Midwest.
As postharvest soil temperatures cool, growers may consider applying nitrogen if time and input costs are favorable. To stabilize nitrogen in the soil for six months until corn can use it, add a nitrification inhibitor such as N-Serve® nitrogen stabilizer.
To maximize results, apply when soil temperatures will stay below 50 F, and avoid soggy areas and sandy soils to reduce the risk of loss from leaching or denitrification.
