With a global network of farms and reliable exports, we’ve become accustomed to the ready availability of delicious stone fruits, like peaches, plums, nectarines and cherries, regardless of the season. In 1999, Chilean farmers were facing significant rejections of their hard-earned stone fruits, particularly cherries and nectarines, due to damage from western flower thrips. This could have meant shortages for consumers and loss of income for farmers. To address the issue and improve export volumes, growers began using Success® Naturalyte® insecticide with Qalcova™ active (spinosad). When the pest spread to table grapes, a crop with few options for pre-harvest treatment, growers again turned to products containing Qalcova and Jemvelva™ active (spinetoram) for their exceptional environmental and toxicology profiles. Products with these active ingredients soon became producers’ top choices to control these insects.

About a decade later, growers also began experiencing challenges with lepidopteran and fly species, including spotted wing drosophila, in vineyards and fields of stone fruits and blueberries. Producers used Qalcova and Jemvelva-based products to fight off these pests and maintain high quality for exporting. The Chilean government now recognizes spotted wing drosophila as a national pest, which has further driven demand for products containing Qalcova and Jemvelva, as producers continue working to reduce damaged produce and increase their volumes of exported fruit.
