A new wider spectrum thistle herbicide for established grassland
Thistlex® Pro is a new systemic herbicide from Corteva Agriscience, particularly effective against a range of tough-to-control perennial weeds, including all species of thistles and buttercups, as well as dandelion, hogweed and cow parsley.
Broad-leaved weeds are bad news for grassland farmers because where they are growing, grass cannot. This means there is less grass for animals to graze or to be cut for conserved forage, so expensive feeds have to be bought-in, stocking rate cut back or more land accessed.
Grass is the cheapest feed on any farm and everything should be done to optimise its yield and utilisation.
Thistlex Pro contains clopyralid and halauxifen-methyl and is a new formulation for grassland. The label supports use on grassland that is grazed only.
Once applied, it translocates down into the roots securing good plant kill. For optimal effect, the spray should be applied when the weeds are 150 to 300mm in size, actively growing and presenting healthy leaves. If the weeds have grown beyond this, they should be topped and the regrowth sprayed when it reaches the correct stage.
Thistlex Pro is good at controlling the biennial spear thistle and perennial creeping thistle. It is especially effective on buttercup species, even those in flower. It will not kill nettles or ragwort but will kill clover if present.
Thistlex Pro is available in a 5 litre pack and has an application rate of 1.67 litres/hectare (l/ha).
