Control weeds in autumn reseeds
Grassland farmers drilling reseeds this autumn will want to establish the cleanest swards possible to recoup lost conserved forage stocks after the summer drought.
“Many farmers in the worst affected areas have already started feeding silage, so this means winter stocks will be less than anticipated,” says Ryan Came-Johnson, field technical manager for Corteva Agriscience.
“Now the rains have come and the soil is still warm, making it ideal to reseed. But weed seedlings will also germinate quickly and will need controlling to ensure maximum grass growth.”
Docks generating from either seed or root fragments lying on, or just below the surface are typically the number one weed challenge at this time of year, along with common chickweed.
Envy®, which contains both fluroxypyr and florasulam, has a wider weed spectrum than straight fluroxypyr. As well as seedling docks, it is much more effective on weeds such as mouse-eared chickweed, mayweeds, buttercups, charlock and mustard.
Envy can be used on new-sown leys up to 30 November and should be applied to weeds that are small and actively growing, when the grass has reached the three leaf stage. This will usually be between six and eight weeks after drilling. As it is a contact herbicide, any broad-leaved weeds not present at application will not be controlled.
“Envy will kill clover and other legumes,” says Ryan. “Where weeds are smothering a grass/clover sward in the autumn, farmers may need to mow the field to halt growth of the weeds and spray next spring with ProClova® XL from 1 April and once overnight temperatures have reached 8o centigrade.”
Fields that are to be treated with Envy should not be rolled or harrowed ten days before and seven days after application. Grazing can resume after seven days, but farmers should wait for four weeks before taking any late silage cuts.
