Top 4 weed control tips for ornamental growers

Sound scouting and sanitation strategies play important roles in any integrated pest management program by helping to strengthen your weed control and resistance management efforts. Here are our top tips to help you keep weeds in check all season long.

  1. Start clean and stay clean. Weeds don’t magically appear in containers; they come from somewhere, and that “somewhere” is often other areas of the nursery or property. So, to prevent spread, keep roadways, propagation zones, bark storage areas and container pads weed-free.
  2. Keep weed populations in check with immediate action.  Certain species can produce seeds in just a few weeks, making early identification and treatment critical. Include weed scouting in your overall IPM plan, and act as soon as weeds emerge. Better yet, incorporate preemergence herbicides to prevent them before they start.
  3. Rotate chemistry and control methods. While herbicide resistance doesn’t develop overnight, it can happen quickly — sometimes in as little as three to five years. Rotate herbicide classes regularly and supplement chemical control with practices like hand-weeding to help avoid resistance and maintain the viability of proven products.
  4. Follow the label.  Very few products are labeled for use inside greenhouses, so always check labels and plan applications accordingly. Applying products as directed helps ensure safety and effectiveness.

For many nursery growers, spring is one of the biggest paydays of the year. When all hands are on deck getting shipments out the door, there’s no time to pull weeds. A sound winter weed control plan using Snapshot® specialty herbicide can help minimize time-intensive weed management, letting your team focus on what matters most – a hassle-free shipping season.

Snapshot uses two active ingredients — isoxaben and trifluralin — to give nursery growers long-lasting broad-spectrum preemergence control of over 120 broadleaf weeds, including bittercress, chickweed, henbit, spurge and other nutrient-robbing weeds. In addition, Snapshot can be applied over the top of more than 600 ornamentals without harm.
