Get ahead of tough weeds in soybean fields using herbicides with
long-lasting residual activity

spring herbicide application in soybean

Quality herbicides with long-lasting residual activity fight tough weeds — even when you’re not in the field.

Take pressure off your soybean fields by controlling weeds from preplant to harvest. The key is overlapping residual herbicides to reduce weed seedbanks and enhance in-season control. Plus, growers get the benefit of application flexibility, resistance management and improved yield potential.

Start with a clean seedbed

Start with tillage or a burndown application. This helps prepare the field for planting and controls weeds already starting to emerge. A clean seedbed helps promote better germination and sets the crop up for a strong start.

Enlist One® herbicide is a great option for a burndown application and is labeled for use before planting Enlist E3® soybeans. Plus, Enlist One herbicide provides effective, neighbor-friendly weed control with better on-target results than traditional 2,4-D products, thanks to the inherent near-zero volatility in 2,4-D choline with Colex-D® technology. In areas with waterhemp, Palmer amaranth or kochia pressure, tank-mix Enlist One with glufosinate for additional control.

Use an effective preemergence herbicide

Next, it’s important to take on tough weeds before they get a foothold in the field. A preemergence herbicide with multiple modes of action and long-lasting residual activity is key for early-season control. This application is critical because any weed in the field after planting will compete with the crop for important soil nutrients. Reducing early weed pressure maximizes plant growth and yield potential.

Kyber® Pro herbicide is a preemergence soybean herbicide with three effective modes of action that provide broad-spectrum control of resistant broadleaf and grass weeds, including Johnsongrass and foxtail. It delivers up to six weeks of residual control and may exceed six weeks in the right conditions. The long-lasting residual creates a wider window for postemergence applications, making it a valuable tool in the fight against PPO- and ALS-resistant weeds.

If broadleaf weeds are the main concern, consider preemergence applications with proven active ingredients like metribuzin and sulfentrazone. Sonic® Boom herbicide provides two proven effective modes of action (Group 14 and Group 5) for long-lasting residual control on a broad spectrum of weeds, including Palmer amaranth, lambsquarters, morningglory, kochia, marestail and waterhemp. The strong, long-lasting residual activity typically lasts between four to six weeks, providing timing flexibility for the postemergence application.

Extend control with a postemergence application

After emergence through the R1 growth stage, extend control with a postemergence application that includes multiple modes of action and residual activity for season-long weed control. Strong residual activity may reduce the need for a second postemergence application, saving you time and another pass across the field.

Enlist E3® soybeans offer more weed control options than with other trait technologies because they feature tolerance to 2,4-D choline, glyphosate and glufosinate. With more than 1,700 qualified tank-mix partners, Enlist One® herbicide delivers multiple sites of action postemergence.

The encapsulated acetochlor in Enversa™ herbicide allows it to drive to the soil for long-lasting residual activity — up to four weeks — while tank-mix partners such as glyphosate remain active on weed tissues for maximum control. Most herbicides with residual activity require water for activation. Typically, 0.5 to 1 inch of rain within the first week after application is required. For example, Enversa requires just 0.5 inch of water for activation.

On the other hand, weed seeds — especially annual grasses and smaller seeded broadleaf weeds — can germinate with a lot less moisture, requiring only a heavy dew or a light shower.

Help fight resistance

A program approach to weed control supports resistance management and controls tough weeds at the same time. Fewer applications can help reduce the selection pressure for weeds resistant to foliar-applied herbicides.

Selecting herbicides with strong residual activity can also help reduce time and money spent making multiple passes across the field. Plus, in-season residuals can help limit yield loss from early-season weed competiton. With this approach, the only pressure is on the weeds!
